  • Gastric Emptying Scan

  • A gastric scan is used to evaluate the rate of empting solids and/or liquids from your stomach. You will be asked to not eat or drink after midnight before your test.

What to expect for a Solid Emptying Scan

    • If your doctor has requested a solid emptying scan, you will be instructed to eat cooked egg whites, which contains a small amount of radioactive material. The radioactive material allows us to track solid food moving through your stomach.
    • Immediately following the ingestion of the egg whites, you will be asked to lie down. A camera will be positioned over your stomach. Images will be taken for approximately 90 minutes.

What to expect for a Liquid Emptying Scan

    • If your physician has requested a liquid emptying scan, you will be instructed to drink a glass of orange juice, which contains a small amount of radioactive material. The radioactive material allows us to track liquids moving through your stomach.
    • Immediately following the ingestion of orange , you will be asked to lie down. A camera will be positioned over your stomach. Images will be taken for approximately 60 minutes.

Your images will be read by a board-certified radiologist and the report will be sent to your doctor.
