A neuropsychologist administers tests of memory, language and other brain functions. Emotional and personality factors are also assessed. This testing is particularly useful in distinguishing changes in ability due to normal aging from changes due to disease or emotional problems. The neuropsychologist will refer to other specialists as needed including:

    • A neurologist: to interview and examine each patient to identify the presence or patterns of abnormal mental functioning or related disorders of coordination, strength or sensation.
    • A psychiatrist: to evaluate the patient in order to determine whether emotional or behavioral problems exist. Some psychiatric conditions, such as depression, may worsen cognitive memory disorders.
