Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Molecular Diagnostics

The division of microbiology offers microbiological consultative and clinical testing services to aid in the diagnosis of infectious diseases. The goal of the clinical service is to perform testing using nationally accepted protocols along with highly accurate diagnostics to make a positive and contributory impact on clinical care and patient outcomes.

Directed by a board-certified pathologist specializing in microbiology and molecular diagnostics, the division is staffed by a team of 55 technologists, technicians and   laboratory assistants, at three hospital sites, who provide testing.

The Lifespan laboratory is the only microbiology laboratory in the state of Rhode Island offering testing in all of the infectious disease areas, including bacteriology, virology, parasitology, acid-fast bacilli, mycology and molecular diagnostics.

The lab is also very active in clinical and diagnostic research.
