Program Overview

The International Program, under the leadership of Kenneth Mayer MD, Professor of Medicine at Brown University and Christine Wanke MD, Professor of Medicine at Tufts University meets monthly in collaboration with the Fogarty AIDS International Research and Training program. This Program provides the opportunity to train and mentor foreign scientists in the conduct of ethically sound and scientifically rigorous laboratory, clinical and sociobehavioral research. Emphasis has been placed on the training of scientists from Moi University in Kenya, and from YRG Care in Chennai, India, which are the major foci for international research by the LTB CFAR. The most extensive overseas research programs of this CFAR are those in Chennai and Vellore in South India. The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, Ghana, the Center of Hope Hospital in Phnom Cambodia, the University of Philippines and the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine, in Manila, Philippines, and the Bach Mai Hospital in Ha Noi, Vietnam.

In addition to the training and mentoring of foreign scientists, the Program members review funding opportunities for collaborative international projects and organize the annual CFAR International Conference. Members of the International Scientific Program utilize the resources of all seven CFAR cores, reflecting the multidisciplinary nature of the research in resource-restricted areas.
