The Brown-Tufts Fogarty AIDS International Research and Training Program (AIRTP) has mentored Indonesian investigators for more than 8 years. The In-country Director is Dr. Tonny Sadjimin, an internationally-reknowned epidemiologist and head of the Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics Unit of Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta, Java. The AIRTP has trained X (Bill: please check and let Vicki know) Indonesian investigators from Jakarta, Central Java, and Bali. One Indonesian medical sociologist, Dr. Sri Tyas, completed her doctoral work at Brown, studying the behavior of commercial sex workers in Yogyakarta as part of the Fogarty. Current Fogarty-funded activities in Indonesia include a study of the use of medical incentives, like free STD and hepatitis screening and treatment, as a way to increase the acceptance of HIV testing among injection drug users in Denpasar, Bali, one of the epicenters of the growing Indonesian AIDS epidemic.
