Essential services for the treatment of mental illness and substance abuse are located not only in our hospitals, but also outside our hospitals’ walls, in the communities where people live and work and where it is most convenient for them to access these services.

    • Lifespan’s partner hospitals are committed to the integration of psychiatry and medicine, providing mental health services for our medical and surgical patients and for more than 75,000 outpatient visits each year. Lifespan is the largest provider of psychiatric and behavioral health services in southern New England, recently partnering with Gateway Healthcare, the largest provider of community behavioral health care.
    Rhode Island and The Miriam hospitals are also nationally recognized for expertise in the field of geriatric psychiatry.

    • Psychiatric services are a major strength of the Norman Prince Neurosciences Institute, whose partners offer a wide array of experts who treat and study mental disorders, many of whom also engage in groundbreaking research on mental illnesses and impairments caused by brain injury, as well as the effects of mental illness on brain biology. We are also world leaders in functional neurosurgery for psychiatric conditions.
    • Gateway Healthcare, which recently joined the Lifespan system, is Rhode Island's largest provider of community behavioral health care, offering integrated treatment and prevention through residential, outpatient and community-based programs. With its staff of more than 700, Gateway annually serves over 19,000 adults and children, providing a comprehensive continuum of services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Gateway's network of affiliates includes The Autism Project, Capital City Community Centers, Caritas, FRIENDS WAY, Lighthouses for youth, New Hope for Families and South Shore Center.
    • Bradley Hospital provides a full range of family-focused, high quality mental health care to infants, children, and adolescents with emotional disorders and/or developmental disabilities. A Lifespan partner and teaching hospital for The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, Bradley Hospital has established itself as the national center for training and research in child and adolescent psychiatry.
    Kids Link RI
    • Bradley Hospital provides outpatient services through its outpatient group programs, as well as through a behavioral health outpatient program at Newport Hospital. These programs allow children to receive therapy in a controlled environment during the day, and return at night to their home and their family.
    • Bradley Hospital offers the Intensive Program for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, the first of its kind on the East Coast, which uses a milieu-based model to treat kids with OCD and obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders.
    • Bradley Hospital and Gateway Healthcare launched Kids Link, a hotline for children in emotional crisis.
    • Newport Hospital offers the community a range of adult psychiatric services that include emergency, inpatient, and outpatient capabilities.
    • Newport Hospital has partnered with Bradley Hospital to provide mental health care for children from ages 3 to 17 in Newport County. Services include psychiatric assessment and treatment; diagnosis; medication management; child and adolescent consultation/liaison; child and adolescent outpatient psychiatry; and the Pediatric Referral Consultation Clinic.
