The division of pediatric ambulatory medicine accepts one to two pediatricians from accredited pediatric programs for a two- or three-year fellowship position.

The program is designed to provide an in-depth postgraduate experience, in the following areas:

  • patient care,
  • teaching of residents and medical students,
  • research design,
  • methods and epidemiology (includes MPH degree), and
  • administration.

In addition to general pediatrics, there is significant exposure to developmental/behavioral pediatrics, adolescent, and emergency pediatric medicine. There is also the opportunity for involvement in such out-of-hospital programs as school-based health clinics and community work through clinics for the underserved.

We encourage independent research and fellows have undertaken such projects as preverbal language communication between adolescent mothers and their infants, use of medication at summer camp, using oral sucrose to relieve the pain of immunizations, and promoting literacy in Hispanic infants.

Past fellows

Of the 12 fellows who have recently completed the program, eight are in academic positions, and four are in private practice. Although past fellows are working in a variety of different geographic locales including Connecticut, Ohio and the United Kingdom, several have remained in Rhode Island.

Several fellows have gone on to distinction:

  • One as the State of Rhode Island's director of the department of children, youth, and their families, and
  • Another as director of the behavioral training program at Ohio State University (a recipient of the 1988 Ambulatory Pediatric Association's Teaching Award).
  • Another recent fellow was awarded the 1997 Ambulatory Pediatric Association's Special Project Award and has remained with an appointment in the division of pediatric ambulatory medicine.

One fellow has also remained with a joint appointment in the divisions of adolescent medicine and pediatric ambulatory medicine and another on our faculty as director of clinical services.
