Neal LeLeiko, MD, PhD

Neal LeLeiko, MD, PhD, is nationally and internationally recognized for his work in pediatric gastroenterology, specifically in pediatric nutrition and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). He is also widely recognized for his work with liver transplantation and short gut syndrome, bowel rehabilitation and small intestinal transplantation. He has consistently been named one of the “Best Doctors in America.”

LeLeiko is director of the division of pediatric gastroenterology, nutrition and liver diseases at Hasbro Children’s Hospital, the pediatric division of Rhode Island Hospital. He is a professor of pediatrics at Brown Medical School and an adjunct professor in the Department of Community and Preventive Medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric gastroenterology.

He has researched, published and presented internationally on such topics as the medical and nutritional management of IBD; the nutritional assessment of pediatric patients; and the effects of various diets on the growth and development of premature and full term infants. LeLeiko’s research has resulted in changes to currently used infant formula. He is widely published in medical journals and is the editor for gastroenterology and nutrition for Pediatrics, the most widely read pediatric journal in the world. He is also the contributing editor for gastroenterology and nutrition for the American Academy of Pediatrics Grand Rounds and has written numerous chapters in pediatrics textbooks used by physicians around the world.

He is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Gastroenterology and a member of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases. LeLeiko is dedicated to training postdoctoral fellows in the field of pediatric gastroenterology, training more than 40 fellows since 1980.

LeLeiko earned a bachelor’s degree from CUNY at Brooklyn College, his medical degree from the New York Medical College and a doctorate in nutritional biochemistry and metabolism from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
