Get the Facts

• Over one million cases of child abuse are substantiated in the United States annually.

• Almost 3,500 of those cases involve Rhode Island children.

• Even more disturbing is overwhelming evidence that child abuse cases are underreported, suggesting the actual incidence of abuse may be higher than current statistics indicate.

In response to the critical need for assessment and treatment of potentially abused children, Hasbro Children's Hospital has instituted the Child Protection Program. The program provides services for children who may have been victims of sexual, physical or emotional abuse, neglect or factitious disorders.

Our Services

Established in 1996 and directed by Carole Jenny, MD—an internationally recognized advocate for children and one of a limited number of child abuse experts in the country—the program offers a full range of services.

Appointments and Emergencies

To set up an appointment, or to discuss a case, you may call 401-444-3996, Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4:30 pm.

Acute cases in which abuse may have occurred within the past 72 hours may be referred directly to the Hasbro Children's Hospital emergency department, where a child protection physician may be consulted to examine and assess the patient.

Referrals

Appointments and/or referrals can be made directly by victims and their families, or by members of the mental health, education, medical, legal, and law enforcement fields, as well as by state child protective agencies. After evaluation at the ChildSafe Clinic, the team will work to refer the child and/or family to counseling as needed.
