Emergency alternatives

Hasbro Children's Hospital, the pediatric division of Rhode Island Hospital, is the only dedicated pediatric facility in the region. Its emergency department, designated as a Level I trauma center, serves the needs of young trauma patients as well as children needing less acute care.

The department is staffed twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week by specialists trained in pediatric emergency medicine and other pediatric sub-specialties, including toxicology, pediatric emergency medicine and critical care.

Recent Improvements

The department recently expanded from 9,000 square feet to 12,200 square feet, with annual volume now exceeding 48,000 patients. Since the expansion of the emergency department, the waiting time to see a physician has decreased from an average of 110 minutes to less than 70 minutes. The emergency department is staffed by eleven full-time physicians and has added several ancillary services, including an interpreter, a social worker and a transporter.

The expansion of the emergency department has increased the number of patient beds from twenty to thirty. There is now a dedicated room for orthopedics and sedation, and three rooms specially designed for behavioral health services.

The new Center for Pediatric Imaging is located next to the emergency department and, in addition, a radiology suite is located within the emergency department. Both features enable us to provide our patients fast, easy access to radiology services.

The facility includes:

  • Fifteen individual treatment rooms
  • Four-bed observation unit
  • Two-patient critical care room
  • Dedicated diagnostic imaging capabilities
