  • Hearty Oatmeal

  • Oatmeal tends to be easy to digest. The longer it needs to cook, the less processed it is, which means it is more nutritious and contains more fiber. Packets of instant oatmeal are less nutritious than oatmeal that cooks for five minutes. Nuts add healthy fats and other nutrients. However, you can make this without nuts if you prefer.

    • ½ cup dry oatmeal, 5-minute cooking
    • 1 cup water
    • ¼-1/2 tsp salt
    • 2 tsp to 1 tbsp Brown sugar, maple syrup
or a combination of the two
    • 2 tbsp walnuts
    • 2 tbsp raisins
    • Optional: milk

Measure 1 cup of water into a 2 cup Pyrex measuring cup. Add salt, oatmeal and sweetener (brown sugar or maple syrup) to taste. Stir. Microwave on medium for 5 minutes. Add raisins, nuts, and milk, if using. Can be eaten from the Pyrex measuring cup.

Total calories: 340-355, depending on the amount of sweetener, plus milk.
