Education Programs
 Our health education programs are available to all expectant mothers
and their families. Call The Noreen Stonor Drexel Birthing Center at 401-845-1133
to sign up for a class or for more information.
- Expectant Parents Educational Visit - $17
A class to help expectant parents prepare for the childbearing
process. The class includes a tour of the birthing center
and covers early and mid pregnancy issues, dealing with complications
and making decisions prior to giving birth. The class is offered
monthly, please call for schedule.
- Childbirth Preparation Series - $93
Childbirth preparation classes for the expectant mother and her
partner. Topics include Lamaze instruction and relaxation techniques,
understanding the stages of labor, pain management and coping
mechanisms, along with newborn feeding and parenting. This is
a series of 4 classes offered on Monday or Wednesday evenings,
7 p.m. to 9 p.m. We also offer a condensed Saturday birthing class
for $102 and a full weekend version for $132.
- Childbirth Preparation Refresher Series - $42
A modified version of our Childbirth Preparation Series. Helps
expectant parents refresh their knowledge of the childbirth process
and newborn care. This is a series of 2 classes offered every
month, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. We also offer a condensed, weekend version.
- Breastfeeding Class - $17
This class educates expectant parents about the advantages of
breastfeeding, frequency of feedings, techniques for beginning
breastfeeding, how to know when the baby is getting enough, preventing
and resolving common problems, and using breast pumps. Dads are
welcome and encouraged to attend. This class is offered the second
Tuesday of every month.
- Breastfeeding Support Group - Free
A postpartum support group to assist new mothers and offer support
in the first few weeks of breastfeeding. Mothers are encouraged
to share their ideas and concerns with other mothers. This group
is facilitated by board-certified lactation consultants. Offered
every Thursday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the birthing center.
- 24 Hour Warm Line - Free
Parents can call the birthing center 24 hours a day with
any questions or concerns they may have about newborn care, parenting
or care of self. The Warm Line is 401-845-1110.
- Sibling Preparation Class - $17 per family
A class to help prepare children for the arrival of a new baby.
Topics include how important it is to be a big brother or sister,
how to help parents with the baby and how to hold the baby. Children
will make a birthday card for their new brother or sister with
their picture in it. They will also be taken on a tour of the
birthing center to see where their mother will be spending the
night. For children 3 years of age or older. Both parents are
encouraged to attend.
- Infant and Child Safety/CPR Series - $25 per person
Two classes designed especially for parents or others, such as
grandparents or babysitters entrusted to supervise children. This
class will teach basic CPR skills for children and infants and
how to clear the airway when a child is choking. This class is
offered monthly; please call for schedule.
- Postpartum Infant Care Class - $17
A class to help parents know what to expect in the first 6 weeks
after giving birth. Discussions focus on the emotional and physical
changes that occur to the mother following the birth, as well
as family adjustment issues. Newborn feeding and care is also
discussed.
- Cesarean Birth Class - $17
A class to prepare the expectant mother and her partner prior
to a cesarean delivery. By appointment.
- The Noreen Stonor Drexel Birthing Center's Lending Library - Free
The library offers a collection of health care books and videos
that anyone can borrow. Subjects include infant care, parenting,
pregnancy care, fathering and many others.
