Lifesaving Skills Classes
Newport Hospital offers several life support training programs throughout
the year, both for the general public and for health care providers.

- Basic Life Support for Health Care
Providers (Recertification)
This 3-hour course, conducted in accordance with the American
Heart Association's 2000 guidelines, is designed to renew
skills learned in response to life-threatening emergencies such
as cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest and foreign body airway
obstruction in adults, infants and children. It includes the use
of the Automatic External Defibrillator (AED). Pre-requisite:
current certification in American Heart Association Basic
Life Support for Health Care Providers.
**Please note--All Newport Hospital employees who are required
to have CPR skills will continue to receive this training within
their own departments on an annual basis.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (Recertification)
An 8-hour course designed in accordance with the American
Heart Association's 2000 guidelines for health care providers
to renew their skills and knowledge in resuscitation attempts
of the adult cardiopulmonary arrest situation. Pre-requisite:
current certification in American Heart Association Basic Life
Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
- Heartsaver FACTS (First Aid/CPR)
This two-day, eight-hour course, designed in accordance with the American Heart Association and the National Safety Council, provides participants with the skills to administer first aid for acute injuries and sudden illness as well as resuscitation techniques for both adults and children.
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
This 18-hour course, designed in accordance with the American
Heart Association guidelines, allows participants to experience
a hands-on approach to resuscitation management of the first 10
minutes of an infant or child arrest situation. Pre-requisite:
current certification in American Heart Association Basic Life
Support for Healthcare Providers.
