Newport Hospital Pediatric Services
Parent Guide
What if my child is afraid?
It is natural for anyone to be afraid of a hospitalization, especially
a child. Encourage your child to talk about his or her fears and
clarify any misconceptions. An individual plan of care will be explained
to you and your child by trained staff members when you arrive at
the pediatric department.
Often a child's worse fear is that of separation from loved ones.
Assure your child that you will visit often and you will be bringing
him or her home as soon as the doctor gives permission. Please do
not promise a specific day for going home as plans may have to be
changed.
It is important to put fears into proper perspective. Children
usually adapt to new experiences with interest and most children
can sense their parents' anxiety. Try to control your own personal
anxieties to lessen your child's fears.
Remember, if you have any questions
concerning your child's hospitalization please feel free to ask
your pediatrician or one of the pediatric nurses. For more information
