Newport Hospital Pediatric Services
Parent Guide
What should I tell my child?
- Answer your child's questions honestly.
- Your child should be told in simple, general terms why hospitalization
is necessary.
- Let your child know that you will be near to give comfort and
support.
- It is best not to promise that their hospitalization will be
fun, but at the same time please do not dwell on the unpleasant
aspects. However, it is necessary to mention that there may be
some uncomfortable moments when doctors and nurses may have to
do tests or give medications.
- Be postitive. Talk about the baths in bed, meals on trays, the
call button for the nurse, people in uniforms, the playroom with
toys and your plans to remain with him or her as much as possible.
- Kids can pick up on adults' anxiety. Try to control your own
personal anxieties to lessen any fears your child may have.
Remember, if you have any questions
concerning your child's hospitalization please feel free to ask
your pediatrician or one of the pediatric nurses. For more information
about pediatric services at Newport Hospital, please call 401-845-1710.
