The Graduate Nurse Internship Program is designed for the new graduate nurse or the registered nurse who wants to practice in the acute care setting, but has little or no experience in this area. This course is comprehensive and focuses on the necessary elements and technical skills that serve as a framework and foundation for the novice nurse in the acute care setting. The course is presented in approximately 12 weeks (plus a three-hour block for final exam and evaluation). Theory is organized into 12 modules and includes orientation to nursing, patient care services, professional issues, health history, rehabilitative care, respiratory care, intravenous therapy, cardiovascular care, post-anesthesia care, surgical care, computer automated systems and critical thinking. Correlation between theory and clinical is initiated through skill workshops, clinical conferences and clinical practice. Clinical practice utilizes the following patient care units: Turner 5 (medical), Turner 4 (surgical), Vanderbilt Rehabilitation Center, intensive and coronary care, emergency department and post-anesthesia care. There will also be an opportunity for an observational experience in the behavioral health unit. Participants are assigned to clinical preceptors who will oversee the clinical component of this course. Scheduled orientations to each clinical unit are built into the course design. All interested nursing staff members are highly encouraged to attend any module and/or any clinical conference. A detailed outline of specific topics, dates and times for both theory and clinical conferences will be posted in the hospital's course catalog and on department bulletin boards.
The clinical conferences designed for this program have been approved for contact hours by the Rhode Island State Nurses Association, which is accredited as an approver of continuing education in nursing by the American Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.
