Nursing Careers at Newport Hospital
Meet Our Nurses
Alicia Williams, RN
Turner 2
For as long as I can remember, I always wanted to be a nurse. Two things that I can recall vividly from my childhood are the nurse at our pediatrician’s office and the pet alligator they had in a stone pool in the back room. The nurse was always starched and neat, she held my hand when I was afraid, she wasn’t afraid to look at the needles, and she wasn’t afraid of that alligator. I envied her strength. It was her strength and image that I wanted to emulate when I grew up.
Two careers later, I am a registered nurse. Nine years ago, as an ADNU [associate degree nurse], I came to work at Newport Hospital’s medical/surgical unit. I found myself working alongside nurses and others who had been here 15 to 20 years; their dedication impressed me. That team of nurses has been so valuable to me. Whenever I was unsure of anything, I was always comfortable asking for help or input. Today I am still working with a great team of multidisciplinary health care providers. We’ve moved to a new floor and we have adopted trendsetting technology.
With the help of the Tuition Assistance Program, which is one of the hospital’s benefits, I obtained a baccalaureate in nursing from Salve Regina University. I hope to continue to use this benefit and soon complete a master’s program. Last summer, as a member of the nursing research committee, I traveled to Europe with my manager, the vice president of nursing and a professor from the University of Rhode Island to make a presentation at an international nursing conference. I also sat on Newport Hospital’s Magnet steering committee and participated in the application and survey process, with the successful culmination of receiving Magnet status! I have had great experiences, tremendous opportunity and a fulfilling career here at Newport Hospital. If you are looking for a team that works hard and works together, this is the place.
