The course is presented in twelve weeks, plus a three-hour block for final exam and evaluation, and consists of 60 theory hours and 200 clinical hours. The approach is comprehensive and focuses on the necessary elements, theoretical issues, and technical skills that serve as a framework and foundation for the nurse in the acute care setting. Theory is presented in nine modules and includes content related to professional issues, health history, rehabilitative care, respiratory care, intravenous therapy, cardiovascular care, surgical care, computer automated systems and critical thinking skills. Participants are scheduled to work days and evenings during clinical practice. Correlation between theory and clinical is initiated through skills workshops and actual clinical practice. Skill workshops are planned for each module and allow the participant to demonstrate competency with skills such as:
Each participant is assigned to experienced clinical preceptors who will oversee the clinical component of the course. The role of the clinical preceptor is to provide guidance and direction and ensure the success of the graduate nurse intern. All participants completing the course will be offered a 6-month temporary registered nurse float position and will be assigned to float to Turner 4 and 5 and the Vanderbilt Rehabilitation Center. They may also be assigned to float to the ICU or emergency department. It is expected that, at the completion of this program, participants will fulfill this obligation to Newport Hospital by working in the float department in this temporary 6-month position. During this time, the employee will apply for permanent positions as they become available. The nursing intern program is fully paid and the program qualifies the intern for all benefits.
