Nursing Careers at Newport Hospital
Meet Our Nurses

Nancy Wilcox, RNNancy Wilcox, RN
Emergency Department

The rewards of nursing are abundant. More than monetary is the feeling of making a difference in someone's life, and knowing that what you do can change a person's life for the better. Physically, it may be medicating them to relieve their pain or starting an IV to keep them from being dehydrated. Mentally, it may be just listening, providing a kind word, holding their hand or providing a hug. In some cases you may find that you are the only source of caring that person may have.

Spiritually, you may provide comfort simply by offering to contact their priest or minister. Sometimes it's letting them know that it is okay, that even though they haven't been to church for years, that God is still there listening and will help them through the last days of their life. You may find yourself being the last person that someone sees on this earth before they die. That in itself is profound, and to be able to help provide them comfort and some peace is an awesome thing.

As I practice nursing here at Newport Hospital, I often hear from patients about how much they appreciate the nurses and what we do. They all say that they feel that we really care. Of all the careers that one may choose, nowhere can you find these unique opportunities to truly make a difference in someone's life.
