Nursing Careers at Newport Hospital
RN Preceptor Program
At Newport Hospital, our nurses recognize the importance of sharing
what they know with all new staff. Our registered nurse preceptors
are experienced clinicians who serve as role models and facilitators.
They coach, inspire and support the development of the new graduate
through the transition from student learner to the practicing professional.
Preceptors are dedicated to sharing their clinical expertise, knowledge
and skills to assist the new graduate nurse to put theory into practice.
They create a learning atmosphere for students and encourage them
to perform at their best, while providing critical feedback, supervision
and direction. They guide the newly hired registered nurses through
the orientation process and help them adjust to the new work environment.
Clinical II registered nurses become preceptors by attending the
four-hour preceptor workshop. The workshop emphasizes critical thinking
and learning as a life-long process and allows the nurse to learn
the preceptor role, process and responsibilities. Principles of
adult learning theory and learning styles serve as a framework for
the program design and clinical practice. Specific legal and regulatory
considerations related to the preceptor role are also covered.
Workshop faculty:
- Lynne Francis, RN
- Dorothy Garman, RN
- Denise Dorato, RN
Upon satisfactory completion of the course, the registered nurse
preceptor receives an hourly differential when serving in the preceptor
role.
