Charlene Cabral, RN, a nurse on a medical/cardiac specialty unit at Rhode Island Hospital, pulls up an electronic record before giving medication to a patient, while staff from other hospitals look on.

Close to 30 hospitals from around the country attended the symposium, which featured interactive discussions facilitated by expert physician and nurse CPOE users from institutions such as Lifespan, SUNY Upstate Medical Center and Denver Health.

Diana Simoes, RN, a staff nurse on a medical/cardiac specialty unit at Rhode Island Hospital, demonstrates the medication system. Before giving medication to a patient, a nurse scans the patient’s wristband to ensure the five rights of giving medication: right patient, right drug, right dose, right time and right route.

Also, participants toured several patient units at Rhode Island Hospital, where they saw demonstrations of CPOE and Medication Administration Check, a computerized system that requires a nurse to scan a patient’s wristband to ensure that medication is given safely.
