Local Study Teaches Shape Up RI "Losers" to Keep the Weight Off

(posted May 23, 2007)

More than 7,000 Rhode Islanders participated in the Shape Up RI 2007 initiative that recently ended, many of them meeting and exceeding weight loss goals set during the 14-week program. Although weight loss is a great first step to a healthy lifestyle, studies show the real challenge can be keeping the weight off over time.

To help Shape Up RI “losers” learn strategies associated with successful weight loss maintenance, researchers in Providence are recruiting for a study designed to help those who have lost 10 or more pounds on the program.

The study, STOP Regain, is a free program being led by researchers at The Weight Control & Diabetes Research Center at The Miriam Hospital. For more than 10 years, the researchers have been studying individuals across the country that have successfully lost weight and kept it off in the National Weight Control Registry (NWCR). STOP Regain participants will be taught the skills and strategies gleamed from participants in the NWCR through one of three intervention programs.

Eligible participants must:

  • Be 18 years or older

  • Have lost 10 or more pounds during the Shape Up RI 2007 program

  • Be available to come to the research facility in Providence twice -once for a baseline assessment visit in May or June, and once for a final assessment in mid-October

  • Be available to take part in six, 30-minute conference calls over the course of the summer, starting around noon. (Participants will be given a toll-free number to call)

Don’t delay! Recruitment for this free study will close on June 4, 2007. For additional information or to be screened for eligibility, call 401-793-8940 or 401-793-8950.
