The Miriam Hospital Earns National Accreditation for CT Scan Program
July 22, 2008

The Miriam Hospital Diagnostic Imaging Center has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in computed tomography (CT) as the result of a recent survey by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

Accreditation is awarded to facilities for the achievement of high practice standards following a peer-review evaluation of the practice. Evaluations are conducted by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who assess the qualifications of the personnel and adequacy of facility equipment. The surveyors report their findings to the ACR’s Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report.

“This accreditation reflects The Miriam Hospital’s commitment to providing the highest quality patient care and speaks volumes about the excellence and expertise of our staff,” says Richard Ross, RTR, director of the hospital’s diagnostic imaging department. “We are honored to be recognized as a national leader in the area of computed tomography.”

CT scans, or CAT scans, use X-rays to produce detailed, cross-sectional pictures of internal structures, including organs, bones and other tissues. Radiologists and technologists can use CT scans to more easily diagnose conditions such as cancer and cardiovascular disease and perform image-guided procedures, including biopsies.

In addition to its CT scan program, The Miriam Hospital has also earned ACR accreditation in ultrasound, mammography and MRI.

The ACR is a national organization serving more than 32,000 diagnostic and interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, and nuclear medicine and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive health care services.
