Rhode Island Hospital Announces New President

Lifespan President and CEO George A. Vecchione today announced that Timothy J. Babineau, MD, MBA, FACS, has been appointed president and CEO of Rhode Island Hospital. Babineau has been the senior vice president and chief medical officer for the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore and associate professor of surgery at the University of Maryland Medical School.
More about Timothy Babineau, MDPrior to joining the University of Maryland Medical Center, he held several leadership positions at Boston Medical Center, Quincy Medical Center, and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He also held teaching positions with Boston University School of Medicine and Harvard Medical School.
“We are very pleased to welcome Dr. Babineau back to New England,” said Vecchione. “We conducted an extensive national search, and are proud to have successfully recruited a new leader with the experience, the expertise and the vision to lead Rhode Island Hospital at this important time in its history. The hospital has become nationally recognized for its cardiac, orthopedics, pediatrics, and emergency care and trauma programs, among others, and under Dr. Babineau’s leadership, we will continue to enhance the depth, breadth and quality of all the hospital’s programs.”
Babineau officially will join the hospital on October 1, becoming just the 18th person and seventh physician to lead Rhode Island Hospital in its 145-year history. “I’m looking forward to getting to know the doctors, nurses, and all the employees who take such wonderful care of patients every day,” said Babineau. “I know Rhode Island Hospital is deeply committed to clinical excellence, patient safety and quality, as well as patient satisfaction, employee satisfaction and physician partnerships. Rhode Island is also increasingly known for its cutting-edge research, and I’ve admired the ascendance of the hospital in both research and teaching, and I look forward to bringing my experience in graduate medical education to Rhode Island. I know that by working together, in partnership with Brown Medical School, we will continue the proud history of Rhode Island Hospital by providing the highest quality care to all who rely upon us.”
Edward J Wing, MD, the new dean of medicine and biological sciences at the Warren Alpert School of Medicine at Brown, said of Babineau’s appointment, “I am very pleased about the recruitment of Dr. Timothy Babineau, who is an outstanding administrator and clinician. I look forward to working with him to continue strengthening the outstanding academic relationship between Rhode Island Hospital and the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.”
Larry Aubin, chairman of the Rhode Island Hospital Board of Trustees, also said, “In Dr. Babineau, I believe we have found a person who is eminently qualified to meet the challenges of the position. Dr. Babineau is a person not only of impressive credentials, but a person of great talent, vision and energy.”
A New England native, Babineau received his BS from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester then attained his MD from the University of Massachusetts in Worcester. He also received a master’s degree in business administration from Boston University. He completed his internship and residency in general surgery at New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston and remained there for a fellowship in surgical nutrition and metabolism. He is board certified in general surgery and has authored numerous reports, presentations and abstracts on research.
Babineau and his wife Mora have two daughters, Kate and Marina.
