Hasbro Children’s Hospital was ranked among the top 30 children’s hospitals in the country based on a survey conducted by Parents magazine. Hasbro was one of only two children’s hospitals in New England to be recognized in the 2009 Best Children’s Hospitals listing.
The survey, published every other year by Parents magazine (and formerly by Child magazine), is designed to serve as a guide for parents. The survey is distributed to children’s hospitals throughout the country that are members of the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI). The survey tool is comprised of 250 questions developed using advice from child health experts. It is designed to comprehensively evaluate each hospital’s survival rates, waiting times, volume of complex procedures, research studies, staff qualifications, patient safety tools, specialty care expertise and much more. Hasbro Children’s was ranked at 29 in the runners-up category.
Timothy J. Babineau, MD, Rhode Island Hospital’s president and CEO, says, “This recognition is a testament to the dedication of the staff at the hospital to provide the best possible care in the safest environment. We are proud to be ranked among the best children’s hospitals in the country.”
The announcement comes as the hospital prepares to celebrate the 15th anniversary of its opening on February 14, 1994. Since then, the hospital has accumulated a series of accolades for its commitment to providing the best care for the children of the community. Among them, the establishment of a child protection center, the development of an injury prevention center and a pediatric transport team, an asthma management program, an expansive healing arts program and a pediatric imaging center and sedation program. Many of its clinicians are also involved in cutting edge research in order to bring the latest in care to its patients.
Newly appointed Hasbro Children’s Hospital’s pediatrician-in-chief, Robert Klein, MD, comments, “We are honored to be recognized among some of the leading institutions in the country. This achievement should serve as a reminder to the parents in our community that their children can receive the best in family-centered care, close to home.”
In addition, the hospital’s surgical division has received acclaim for numerous surgical procedures, minimally invasive surgical techniques and first of their kind procedures, the state’s first pediatric kidney transplant; the development of a fetal surgery program to perform the first in-utero fetal surgery in the Northeast, a rare microvascular procedure to treat a girl with an aggressive tumor in her wrist, and procedures to grow bone in the leg of a boy without one.
Surgeon-in-chief Thomas Tracy, MD, notes, “We strive every day to ensure that we are bringing the latest in our research and surgical techniques to our patients. Our surgeons, pediatric anesthesiologists and all the staff work hard to provide the best care to our patients, and we are honored by this recognition.”
