Gary Bubly, MD, FACEP, associate director of The Miriam Hospital’s department of emergency medicine, has been named the recipient of the 2009 Charles C.J. Carpenter, MD, Outstanding Physician of the Year Award. Recognized by his peers as an exemplary physician, advocate and colleague, Bubly was presented with the award at The Miriam Hospital’s staff association meeting on June 8.

Gary Bubly, MD“We’re thrilled to recognize an individual whose contributions have made a significant impact not only on The Miriam Hospital but also our community,” said Kathleen C. Hittner, MD, president and CEO of The Miriam Hospital. “Dr. Bubly tirelessly devotes his time to helping others, whether it’s his patients, medical residents, or staff. He is a leader both in his field and within our institution, and his commitment, skills and compassion are without question. We congratulate him on this well-deserved award.”

Peers who nominated Bubly cited his advocacy work on behalf of both patients and physicians, and his citizenship within The Miriam Hospital. In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Bubly serves as chairman of the hospital’s emergency operations and pandemic flu planning committees and has taken an active role in statewide disaster management planning. He is also president of the Rhode Island chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians and a councilor-at-large of the Rhode Island Medical Society.

Bubly is also involved in The Miriam Hospital’s partnership with Ha’ Emek Medical Center in Israel, and has spent time there as part of an exchange program designed to expose medical professionals to different cultures and allow staffers from both hospitals to learn from one another.

As an educator, Bubly is clinical associate professor of emergency medicine and medicine at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, teaching emergency medicine to residents and medical students at The Miriam Hospital. He served previously as the assistant director of emergency medicine education at The Miriam and is the recipient of the Teaching Recognition Award for Clinical Faculty and the Clinical Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award from Alpert Medical School. He is also employed by the University Emergency Medicine Foundation, Inc. (UEMF).

A graduate of Dartmouth College, Bubly received his medical degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School and completed his residency in internal medicine at The Miriam Hospital. He has been named one of Rhode Island’s “Top Doctors” in emergency medicine by Rhode Island Monthly five times, and this year he received the Department of Emergency Medicine/UEMF Exemplary Service Award.

Bubly is board certified in both emergency medicine and internal medicine. He resides with his family in Somerset, MA, and enjoys scuba diving and windsurfing.
