These six tips for parenting daughters are just as valid for sons:

1. Adolescents need relationships and rules. Rules are important, but in the absence of relationships they are hard to enforce.
   
   
2. Validate a girl's adult behavior whenever possible.
   
   
3. Praise honesty and authenticity, rather than popularity.
   
   
4. Encourage educational pursuits and her intellect.
   
   
5. Discuss sexual values and how to handle situations.
   
   
6. Examine your own gender-based assumptions.
