Gynecologists recommend that women should begin to have Pap smears by the age of 18 or when they become sexually active. Pap smears should be conducted at least once a year. If you have had abnormal results or a family history of cervical cancer, your doctor may require you to have a pap smear every three to six months. Pap smears should be done throughout a woman's life, even after menopause.
