Background

Cindy L. Schwartz, MD, MPH, is director of pediatric hematology/oncology at Hasbro Children’s Hospital and the Alan G. Hassenfeld Professor of Pediatrics at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Previously, she was the director of clinical programs and clinical research in pediatric oncology at Johns Hopkins.

Schwartz has internationally recognized expertise in Hodgkin disease. She chaired the Hodgkin Disease Committee of the Children’s Oncology Group and its predecessor, the Pediatric Oncology Group from 1999-2011, developing the chemotherapy regimen now used throughout the USA for childhood Hodgkin disease that employs a short-duration, dose-dense, response-based approach. Most recently, as part of achieving a master’s degree from the Harvard School of Public Health, she developed predictive models in pediatric Hodgkin lymphoma.

In addition, Schwartz has been a leader of the Children’s Oncology Group Osteosarcoma Committee, running three national clinical trials designed to overcome resistance to conventional treatments.  She is chair of the data safety monitoring board of NANT (Novel Approaches to Neuroblastoma Therapy), has been on the scientific advisory board of the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study, and many editorial and review groups.

At Hasbro Children’s, Schwartz is the founder and medical director of the CHAMPS program for survivors of childhood cancer. Her nationally recognized expertise in this area comes from prior experience initiating similar programs for long-term cancer survivors at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine as well as the University of Rochester. She is also a founding member and chair of research for the Consortium for New England Childhood Cancer Survivorship.

Schwartz is editor of the leading textbook, Survivors of Childhood and Adolescent Cancer
