Background
Rachel Altura, MD, is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. After completing a fellowship at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis in 1999, she became an Assistant Professor and Principal Investigator at The Ohio State University School of Medicine and Nationwide Children’s Research Institute until joining Brown and Hasbro Children’s in 2007. She is currently funded by the National Institutes for Health and a Hyundai Hope on Wheels Foundation research grant. Her research work focus is on uncovering mechanisms for tumor cell growth and resistance to therapy in both childhood and adult solid tumors. She has a research laboratory in the Center for Hematology-Oncology Research, housed at the newly renovated Coro West research building. This effort is funded in part through the National Institute of Health's COBRE Cancer Research and Development Award, an $11 million grant awarded to five principal investigators studying different aspects of cancer research. Her interest in cancer and molecular biology is focused on how cancer cells develop and survive, with the goal of finding novel therapeutic agents that will stop tumor growth.
