Katherine M. Sharkey, MD, PhD is board-certified in sleep medicine, internal medicine, and psychiatry. She is an associate professor of medicine and psychiatry and human behavior at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Dr. Sharkey is a sleep medicine physician at the Brown Medicine Sleep Center, and medical director of the Sleep for Science Research Laboratory at Brown. 

Dr. Sharkey received her medical degree and completed her PhD in neuroscience from Rush University, Chicago. She completed her residency in internal medicine and psychiatry at Rush University Medical Center, where she was also named chief resident by a committee of her peers. 

Dr. Sharkey is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, where she is past chair of the academy’s Young Investigator Research Forum and the Circadian Rhythms section. She is an associate editor of Behavioral Sleep Medicine and serves on the editorial board of Sleep Health. Dr. Sharkey also served on the Society for Women’s Health Research Interdisciplinary Network on Sleep.

Research

Her research focuses on sleep and circadian rhythms, particularly as they relate to mood regulation and women’s health. Her current research is supported by the National Institute of Mental Health and the Hassenfeld Child Health Innovation Institute.
