Recombinant DNA |
The Recombinant DNA Committee (RDC) is composed of scientists and community members who review all research proposals involving recombinant DNA experiments. The role of the committee is to ensure that recombinant DNA research at Lifespan conforms to specific guidelines set out by the NIH. The review process ensures that experiments are performed with appropriate safety precautions, and that all laboratory personnel are trained in the proper handling and disposal of recombinant DNA.
According to the NIH Guidelines, recombinant DNA molecules are defined as either: (i) molecules that are constructed outside living cells by joining natural or synthetic DNA segments to DNA molecules that can replicate in a living cell, or (ii) molecules that result from the replication of those described in (i) above.
RDC review and approval is required before any project using recombinant DNA is initiated.
