Numerous studies have demonstrated that cardiac rehabilitation programs help cardiac patients stay out of the hospital and enhance their overall quality of life. The 12,500-square-foot state-of-the-art cardiac fitness center helps participants recover from serious cardiac problems that often result from surgery or other medical procedures. Our goal is to provide the correct balance of exercise, nutrition, stress management, education and individual support services that will help patients incorporate heart healthy habits into everyday life.

A Proven Individualized Approach

Stress tests provide a baseline and map out an individualized exercise and behavior modification program based on the needs—emotional, psychological and physical—of each patient. The program is outcome-based for psychosocial improvements, exercise and risk factor reduction. The center is affiliated with the outpatient pulmonary rehabilitation program at The Miriam Hospital.

Programs include:

  • cardiac rehabilitation medicine
  • cardiac rehabilitation as a multifaceted intervention
  • review of lipid management
  • exercise physiology
  • stress testing
  • prevention for cardiovascular health

Every effort is made to help patients break old habits and develop new, healthier behaviors; this includes a family night for patients' families to learn about the disease, risk factors and management techniques. At the end of the program, the center sends an outcome letter to the patient's referring physician. The letter also contains the patient's "rehab prescription," which the patient also receives at discharge.

Our multidisciplinary team includes:

  • cardiologists
  • exercise physiologists with graduate training
  • nutritionists
  • psychologists
  • registered nurses

The team sees participants through cardiac rehabilitation programs designed to help them obtain optimal health and cardiac fitness.

Scheduling and Focus

The center's primary focus is on "phase two" patients, those who had some type of cardiac event that prompted a referral to the center. The total length of rehabilitation varies by insurer and diagnosis. "Phase one" patients—those who want to prevent heart disease—are not covered by insurance but are welcome at the center and may self-pay.

Referrals to the center should be made as much in advance as possible, since insurance approvals take time. The staff will coordinate with the insurance company, physician's office and patient to receive approvals. For more information, please call us at 401-528-8500.
