Rhode Island Hospital is among the first hospitals in the country to test the effectiveness of a new treatment for emphysema. Rhode Island Hospital pulmonary physician Muhanned Abu-Hijleh, MD, will serve as the principal investigator for the federally approved clinical trial to test the IBV Valve, designed to improve the health status and overall quality of life in patients with emphysema.
The IBV Valve, manufactured by Spiration, Inc. is a small, umbrella-shaped device implanted during bronchoscopy without an incision. It is placed in the airway to help redirect airflow away from damaged areas of the lung and into healthier portions.
Abu-Hijleh says, “We are excited to participate in this groundbreaking treatment for people with emphysema. We are hopeful that this trial will give us a minimally invasive approach that will improve the lives of patients living with this progressive disease that can have such a debilitating impact.” He adds, “I encourage individuals in our area who have emphysema to consider taking part in this trial to help us improve the way this disease is treated.”
