About Our Physicians

Rhode Island Hospital's total medical staff numbers 1,440 physicians. Board certification or eligibility in a specialty or sub-specialty is required for all appointed members of the medical staff, as well as those with limited clinical privileges.

The physicians on the Rhode Island Hospital medical staff are categorized as either hospital-based or community-based. Hospital-based physicians are either employed by the hospital, a foundation affiliated with the hospital or Brown Medical School, or by a group with an exclusive arrangement for medical services.

All other physicians are categorized as community-based. Some 70 percent of those in the active and consulting categories are physicians with a community-based private practice. The remaining are hospital-based physicians whose principal activities include teaching, research, treating patients and serving in various administrative capacities. These physicians also have an academic or clinical faculty appointment at Brown.
