Giving to Rhode Island Hospital

Joseph Amaral, MDA Reflection on Foundations

A foundation is defined as the basis upon which something stands or is supported. The mission of Rhode Island Hospital is to provide the highest quality of care, and it is supported by the foundation of donor generosity. Taking in the tremendous changes that have occurred in the past couple of years at Rhode Island Hospital, it is amazing to note all that has been accomplished with the help of physicians, employees, corporate sponsors, private donors and the community. Our foundation remains a firm support for these and future accomplishments, thanks to the friends of Rhode Island Hospital.

The Legacy Campaign, the largest fundraiser we’ve undertaken, has been the catalyst for new state-of-the-art facilities, including the Andrew F. Anderson Emergency Center and cancer center. These developments are improving patient care and satisfaction on every front. It is vital that we continue to have the support of our friends, so that we may realize the full vision of the campaign, including the development of our pediatric imaging center.

We are on the cutting edge of technology, offering the latest treatments and pioneering some of the latest advances in medicine. Right here in Rhode Island, our physicians are offering services that can only be found in a handful of facilities around the nation, including the fetal surgery treatment that you can read about in our newsletter. We are innovators for advanced cancer treatments including our new Trilogy Stereotactic System, which provides patients with very targeted treatment and consequently less recovery time.

Our researchers are changing the way we look at cancer treatment and providing hope that improved patient options are on the horizon. Scientists in our COBRE lab are helping to reduce the risk and incidence of cancer and mortality in southeastern New England through research on esophageal, stomach, colon, pancreatic and liver cancer. The more than thirty COBRE physicians, researchers and staff collaborate with scientists from around the world, sharing their knowledge and discoveries so that cures may be found sooner rather than later.

As seriously as we take the healing of the body, we equally understand the importance of the healing of the heart and mind. As you walk through our hospitals, art surrounds you. One cannot help but notice and appreciate the abundance of vital art collections, sculptures, murals and clay tiles that create a soothing, inspirational environment for our patients and visitors. Our Healing Arts Program is award-winning and includes more than just the art on the walls. The program comprises myriad innovative art activities that are able to engage and transport the minds of patients who are troubled by illness, allowing them a period of therapeutic repose.

Great things are happening at Rhode Island Hospital thanks to your support. We offer immense gratitude for your lasting contributions and hope to continue our collaboration establishing the Rhode Island Hospital of the 21st century.

From the staff at Rhode Island Hospital and Rhode Island Hospital Foundation
