Poppas, MD
Athena Poppas, MD, director of the echocardiography
laboratory at Rhode Island Hospital, specializes in treating
women with heart disease during pregnancy.
As a cardiologist, Poppas focuses her research on the various facets
of heart disease in women. She has presented and published internationally
on topics such as stress echocardiography in women, cardiovascular
properties in normal pregnancy and the role of echocardiography
in new technologies, among others.
Poppas is an assistant professor of medicine at Brown Medical School
and a member of the Clinical Care Working Group of the National
Center of Excellence in Women's Health at Women & Infants Hospital.
Poppas was named a Top Doctor for Women by Rhode Island Monthly
magazine and received the Young Investigator Award from the American
Heart Association for her research on cardiovascular disease in
women.
Poppas is a fellow for the American Heart Association, serving
as a member of the Women in Cardiology Committee and abstract reviewer
for the Conference on Women, Heart Disease and Stroke. She is also
a fellow of the American College of Cardiology (ACC) and is the
chair of the organization's Women in Cardiology Committee. She is
also a member of the ACC Task Force to Develop Ethics Agenda and
chair of the ACC Professional Life Survey Work Group.
She received a bachelor of science from Brown University and a
doctor of medicine from the University of Wisconsin Medical School.
Poppas completed her residencies in internal medicine at University
of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics and in cardiovascular medicine
at University of Chicago Hospital.
