Dupuy, MD
Damian Dupuy, MD, is the director of ultrasound in the department
of diagnostic imaging
at Rhode Island Hospital and is a pioneer in radiofrequency
ablation (RFA). He is also a professor of diagnostic imaging
at Brown Medical School.
First approved by the FDA in 1997, RFA is a minimally invasive
technique that uses heat to destroy tumors. Since its approval,
a number of hospitals around the country have adopted the technique,
most often to destroy liver tumors. Dupuy took RFA a step further
and broadened its application to successfully combat breast, kidney,
lung, adrenal and bone cancer. In the years following FDA approval,
more than 1000 patients have undergone radiofrequency ablation at
Rhode Island Hospital, the largest use of RFA in treating malignancy
in North America. Other newer technologies such as percutaneous
microwave ablation and combination therapies using RFA with external
beam radiation or internal radiation seeds have been pioneered by
Dupuy at Rhode Island Hospital. Dupuy is now leading national trials
in the use of microwave technology for the treatment of tumors.
Dupuy has published more than 120 articles and given numerous presentations
nationally and internationally in the field of imaging and minimally
invasive cancer therapies.
