Cardiothoracic Surgery

Statistics of Success

Not only is the division of cardiothoracic surgery able to provide you with the best care, we are able to do so with the most advanced procedures and technology available today. We do everything medically possible to achieve the best outcomes with the least trauma.

This is well represented by our incredibly low numbers of complications related to surgery at Rhode Island Hospital. You will see that our numbers are at or below and often well below national levels compiled by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), the benchmark national organization for statistical reporting for cardiac surgery (Figure 1).

We routinely employ minimally invasive techniques and technology for patients with a broad range of cardiac problems, such as valvular disease or coronary artery disease. Our techniques include minimally invasive off-bypass coronary artery bypass (OPCAB) and less invasive sternal approach (LISA). Keyhole surgery techniques have also been effective in repairing heart valves and congenital heart defects. Many of our patients leave the hospital within four days of their operation and return to work
within two or three weeks.

We also offer an innovative array of more traditional invasive cardiac surgeries for coronary artery disease, valvular disease, surgery on the aorta, heart rhythm abnormalities, and heart failure. We perform all types of complex cardiac surgeries each year with a high success rate. Our patients choose Rhode Island Hospital because of our high success rates, which is a direct result of our vast experience and a caring team of varied sub-specialists. The sheer volume of our open-heart surgeries and positive results demonstrates our expertise (Figures 1-3).
