What should I expect next?

Your first contact with our office will be with one of our receptionists who will schedule your appointment in a timely manner. When you call,
we will ask for some general information, such as your name, address, telephone
number, and social security number, as well as your insurance coverage
and insurance numbers. Your first scheduled appointment will be for a consultation only. The surgery will not be scheduled until after you have
met with one of our physicians for a consultation.
Prior to your initial appointment, we will send an informational packet that includes an introductory letter, educational brochure, and a
questionnaire to be completed at home and brought with you on the day of your
visit. Patients in HMOs and other "managed care" groups need to
have appointments authorized by your primary care physician.
Check list for consultation:
- Bring your insurance cards.
- Obtain approval from your primary care doctor, if needed. Check your insurance plan.
- Complete and bring the medical questionnaire.
- Be sure you know the location of the biopsy, bring any
photographs or drawings that help identify the location.
- Feel free to bring a friend or family member.
Your initial visit will last about about an hour. You will meet with one of the
nurses who will review your medical history, medications and allergies. You will be instructed in the Mohs method of surgery and receive preoperative information.
You will also meet with one of the physicians who will review your medical history and examine the
area of concern. We will explain the Mohs technique and
how to best treat your particular skin cancer. You will have an opportunity to ask any questions you may have. Family involvement is
encouraged.
The Mohs surgery unit of University Dermatology is a teaching program affiliated with Brown University. Often a fellow or resident
will work with the team on the day of your visit.
When you leave, you will be given a Mohs surgical date, usually within 2-3 weeks. If we recommend, or if you desire that a plastic surgeon be involved in your repair, the
surgery date will be dependent upon the plastic surgeon's availability. Suture removal is generally seven days after surgery. When the wound has healed, you will be referred to your dermatologist for the long-term care of
your skin.
