Nuclear Medicine
Preparing for Your Exam
Bone Scans
- You should drink 2 glasses of water before coming in for a bone
scan, and 2 glasses of water after your injection.
PET or Hepatobiliary Scans
- You should not eat or drink anything for 4 hours before a PET scan or
hepatobiliary scan. If you are diabetic and are scheduled for a PET
scan, you should contact our department at 401-444-5281 for special instructions.
Thyroid Scans
- No special preparation is required for a thyroid scan, except that
certain medications be discontinued before the exam. Call the nuclear
medicine department at 401-444-5281 to find out if your current
medications may interfere with this exam.
- If you have had an exam in which intravenous contrast or dye was administered,
you must wait 6 weeks before having a nuclear medicine
thyroid scan. If you are currently taking Synthroid, you must stop the
medication and wait 4
weeks before having a nuclear medicine thyroid scan.
Other Scans
- No special preparation is required for most other nuclear medicine
scans.
