Echocardiography and Stress Testing

Echocardiography is a procedure that uses sound waves to create a moving image of the heart and its chambers. It is a noninvasive, safe, fast and painless way for physicians to see the heart’s motion and size to help determine if there is inflammation, blockage or other related problems.

We perform more than 7,500 studies each year and have five dedicated rooms in our laboratory; each is equipped with state-of-the-art technology to test for a variety of heart problems. Our digital echocardiograph systems produce clear, immediate, 3-dimensional images and help our physicians develop and retrieve images. All tests are reported to your referring physician the day they are completed.

Our collaboration within the hospital is unique. We work with the cardiac catheterization lab to provide ultrasound guidance to close holes in the heart without surgery and collaborate with electrophysiology to evaluate and guide specialized pacemaker insertion in patients with heart failure. We were the first in the state to have this collaboration. Our exercise echocardiography lab works closely with our new emergency centers’s chest pain unit to efficiently and accurately evaluate patients for coronary artery disease and with our cardiac anesthesiologists to ensure the best care. We are Rhode Island’s only hospital staffed with cardiac anesthesiologists who are specially trained in echocardiography to help guide open heart surgery.

Our Dedicated Staff

All of our cardiologists are subspecialty accredited and trained to read echocardiograms. Along with our cardiac sonographers and nurses, we provide the very latest and highest quality care. Your primary care physician or your attending physician can refer you for this service.
