Coronary Heart Disease Risk Factor Modification Program
The goal of the Coronary Heart Disease and Dyslipidemia Program at Rhode Island Hospital is prevention of primary and secondary coronary heart disease.
A treatment plan is formulated based on the presence of coronary heart disease risk factors and degree of lipid (cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides) abnormality in each of our patients. This plan includes extensive nutritional counseling and advice about lifestyle modification.
After measurement of lipids, drug therapy is often advised, depending on the severity of the disorder. If lipid-lowering medications are recommended, any possible side effects will be discussed and printed information will be provided. We also follow up with laboratory testing and phone conversations for each of our patients about the effect of the diet and lifestyle modification and drug therapy.
We send a report of the evaluation and treatment plan to your primary physician, as well as all follow up laboratory testing and lipid treatment decisions. We report to your physician within 48 hours; even sooner if something significant is found.
Non-lipid coronary heart disease risk factors include:
- Cigarette smoking
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes mellitus
- Family history of premature coronary heart disease
- Increasing age
- Physical inactivity
- Obesity
- Poor diet (high in saturated fat, cholesterol and calories)
The most important thing we can give you is time. We are available to answer your questions and to give information and support. Back
