As a leader in acute cardiac care, we are the first in the state to identify patients with heart attacks through wirelessly transmitted electrocardiograms in coordination with the Cranston, Warwick and Providence fire departments and the Andrew F. Anderson Emergency Center. We strive to provide worldclass care to our patients and are involved in ongoing cutting-edge research to ensure we can continue to offer the latest technology and treatments in interventional cardiology.
Our four all-digital catheterization laboratories use high-resolution
video imaging systems with digital acquisition abilities. All reports
and images are stored electronically to maximize efficiency and
minimize cost. The digital technology enables us to make images
available at other locations throughout the hospital or on CD for
easier physician access. Our lab emphasizes communication and fast
follow up with referring physicians. Within minutes of each procedure,
detailed patient information is faxed to referring physicians.
The lab's integrated care process provides everything a
cardiac patient could need. Patients who have an outpatient catheterization
can also have definitive interventional therapy within the same
facility.
Rhode Island Hospital pioneered the development of percutaneous
coronary interventions starting in 1978. Subsequently, many current-day
techniques, strategies and tools used to perform diagnostic catheterization
and interventions were developed in conjunction with the Rhode Island
Hospital catheterization laboratories. These advances have made
the diagnosis and treatment of coronary artery disease easier, safer,
more accurate and more effective.
More recently we have investigated and participated in the refinement
of intracoronary brachytherapy (radiation) for treating patients
with restenosis or blockages that return. This unique form of therapy
is the only treatment that has been proven effective for this condition.
