Charles Carpenter, MD is a professor of medicine at Brown University, the former director of the division of infectious diseases at Johns Hopkins Hospital and the former chairman of medicine at Case Western Reserve University. His principle research interest is in viral diseases, in particular, HIV infection. He is the principal investigator and director of a major National Institutes of Health (NIH) Center grant, entitled Lifespan/Tufts/Brown Center for AIDS Research (CFAR). Carpenter is internationally recognized for his efforts in AIDS-translational research.
Carpenter has served on national international advisory committees, received a number of prestigious national and international awards, including his recent award, the John E. Fogarty Recognition Award for International Health. It was presented at the John E. Fogarty International Center 35th Anniversary Symposium on May 21, 2003. He was recognized for his career accomplishments in research that addressed the major disease problems of developing countries and his involvement in training scores of researchers in international health. He has also served as a mentor for hundreds of physicians and physician scientists.
