Associate Professor of Medicine

Steven Moss, MD, is an associate professor of medicine at Brown University and a clinical gastroenterologist at Rhode Island Hospital. He attended medical school at the University of London, UK and completed his internship and residency at London Hospitals. He also completed clinical and research fellowships in gastroenterology at The Royal Postgraduate Medical School, Hammersmith Hospital, London, UK, and St. Luke's—Roosevelt Hospital, New York.

Moss joined the faculty at Columbia University as assistant professor and moved to Brown University in 2000.

Theme B: Pathogenesis of Gastrointestinal Tumors
COBRE CCRD Research: H. pylori in Gastric Carcinogenesis, Peptic Ulcer

Moss' research is focused on the pathogenesis of H. pylori and its role in gastric cancer, particularly in relationship to cell cycle dysregulation. His laboratory was the first to show that H. pylori induces gastric epithelial apoptosis. He is exploring the cellular and molecular mechanisms by which this bacterium does so and examining the consequences of the resultant hyper-proliferation. In certain circumstances, chronic H. pylori infection is associated with a state of resistance to apoptosis in gastric epithelial cells that may be directly relevant to gastric carcinogenesis. Apoptosis-resistance in these cells is associated with low expression of the p27 cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor/tumor suppressor.

Ongoing research funded by the COBRE grant is examining the mechanisms and consequences of low p27 expression in gastric cells that have acquired resistance to H. pylori-induced apoptosis.
