Robert Smith, MD is a professor of medicine and director of endocrinology at Brown University, director of the division of endocrinology at Rhode Island Hospital and The Miriam Hospital and director of the Hallett Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology at Rhode Island Hospital. He received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and did postdoctoral training at Duke University, the National Institutes of Health and Brigham and Women's Hospital.
His research interests focus on the molecular mechanisms of normal cell signaling and disease-linked abnormalities in signaling in insulin, insulin-like growth factor, growth hormone and pro-inflammatory cytokine pathways. Smith's current research support includes two NIH RO1 grants and a mentor-based fellowship award from the American Diabetes Association. He has more than 150 publications, has served on multiple editorial boards and grant review committees and has held leadership positions on numerous institutional research committees. He has mentored more than 70 students, graduate students and postdoctoral research fellows and serves as a trainer in two PhD granting programs at Brown University. He received the Harvard Division of Medical Ethics Responsible Conduct of Research Award in recognition of his mentoring qualities.
