Ultrasound
How to Prepare for an Ultrasound
If your doctor has scheduled you to have a procedure (biopsy, drainage or
aspiration) performed in the ultrasound department at Rhode Island
Hospital, here's how you should prepare:
- Abdominal Ultrasound: Do not eat anything for 6 hours before
the test.
- Pelvic/Fetal Ultrasound: Drink 32 oz. of water one hour
before your appointment. Do not urinate before the procedure, as a
full bladder is necessary to make the procedure successful.
- Thyroid/Vascular Ultrasound: No special preparation is
necessary.
- Transrectal Ultrasound of the Prostate: Fleet enema 2 hours
prior to appointment.
If you have questions regarding the appropriate preparations before the
procedure please call 401-444-5309 or e-mail JGrusmark@Lifespan.org.
