The Andrew F. Anderson Emergency Center

Go behind the scenes in the emergency center

  • The Andrew F. Anderson Emergency Center visiting philosophy

At Rhode Island Hospital, we believe that patients' families and friends are important to their well being. We encourage patients to have a loved one with them while they wait and during their treatment, if appropriate. Should additional family members or friends come to see the patient while he or she is in the emergency center, they may visit if the patient gives consent. For the patient's comfort, we may limit the number of loved ones who can be at the patient's bedside.

We recognize the patient's family and friends as important members of the health care team, and we strive to keep them informed of the patient's progress.

Reception and waiting - visible by nursing staff at all times, and accessible from the parking garage via the stairs and elevator. Families may pick up and drop off patients at the center entrance.

  • Central nursing stations - offer maximum visibility of patients, as well as improved efficiency and traffic flow for staff.

  • Triage - private rooms in which specially trained triage nurses determine the severity of a patient's illness or injury.

Major patient care areas

  • Fast track - developed for patients with less urgent conditions. Emergency center physicians, RNs, LPNs and technicians ensure that patients are treated quickly, privately, and away from more severe emergency cases.

  • Urgent care A and Urgent care B - designed for patients with non-life-threatening injuries or illnesses, but who need urgent care.

  • Critical care - equipped so that the team can care for patients with life-threatening illnesses or injuries. Patients can be tested using CT scan, echocardiography, x-ray and electrocardiography. Physicians in every specialty are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and can be called in at any time. There is an elevator that goes directly to the operating room one floor above-this opens across from the trauma operating room.

Specialty care areas and accomodations for families

  • Chest pain center - patients who are admitted for observation for chest pain can be tested, treated, monitored and discharged within 23 hours. Patients can receive a stress test, CT scan, echocardiography, x-ray and/or other necessary tests in this center.

  • Clinical decision unit - created for patients who require psychiatric observation and detoxification after their emergency center visit.

  • Decontamination room - equipped for patients who have been exposed to toxic chemicals or biological hazards. The staff has extensive training in hazardous materials, and keeps current through numerous drills every year. The hospital is equipped to accommodate multiple patients at a time, and also has two decontamination tents.

  • Diagnostic imaging - a complete range of diagnostic and interventional procedures in general radiology and in subspecialty areas. Our diagnostic imaging equipment reflects the latest technological developments and advances in imaging science.

  • Family waiting area - each care area has a waiting area for patients' families.

  • Private family room - located off the lobby, the private family room allows families of critically ill patients and/or grieving families privacy and quiet.

  • PCPs and family practice physicians - Primary care physicians and family practice physicians are important members of the health care team. At the Andrew F. Anderson Emergency Center, we make every effort to keep primary care physicians and family practice physicians informed of their patients' conditions and treatments. With a work room where primary care physicians and family practice physicians can attend to administrative and consultative matters, The Andrew F. Anderson Emergency Center partners with physicians to provide high quality care.
