Research Projects
Substance Abuse Prevention Initiative
In 2006, the Injury Prevention Center collaborated with the city of
Providence on a youth developed media campaign promoting substance
abuse prevention. Local high school art students created cinema and
bus shelter advertisements and billboards featuring their artwork.
Through a State Incentive Grant from the State of Rhode Island,
Department of Mental Health, Retardation and Hospitals, the Injury
Prevention Center is implementing a comprehensive approach consisting
of individual, family and environmental strategies to reduce the
substance abuse problem in Providence.
- Implementation of Project SUCCESS, a Center for Substance Abuse
Prevention (CSAP) model program, at the Met School Public Street
campus
- Implementation of Strengthening Families, a CSAP model program,
at the CVS Highlander School
- Implementation of policy strategies related to alcohol and tobacco
advertising and location/density of alcohol and tobacco retail
vendors
- Implementation of enforcement strategies related to enforcing
drinking and driving laws and applying appropriate penalties to
minors in possession
- Implementation of a mass media educational campaign around substance
abuse
The center has also partnered with the Met School to conduct the
Leadership and Resiliency Program, another CSAP model program, with
all ninth graders at the Met School Peace Street campus.
